As a Brazilian immigrant who's been in the US for more than 20 years, though I am still able to speak, read and write in Portuguese, I find my English is more dominant at this point given primary, secondary, and post-secondary schooling in English.  Now that I have children (2.5-year-old and 13-month-old) who I am raising bilingually, I realize how much Portuguese vocabulary I am lacking!  Here are some ways I have been attempting to "refresh" my Portuguese (and ways you can as well in your own language):

1. Translating children's books in English that my husband and I enjoy reading to our children (books like Corduroy, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, If You Give a Mouse a Cookie, etc.) – this is a laborious process at times which reveals my lack all the more, but it certainly helps me revisit "long lost" vocabulary, particularly specialized vocabulary.  The online language dictionary http://www.wordreference.com is an excellent resource as it provides translation for multiple languages and also includes idiomatic expressions, multiple meanings, forums for specialized or novel word usage, etc.

2. Relearning children's rhymes and songs – for weeks before my first child was born, I spent weeks listening to children's CDs in Portuguese and typing out the lyrics.  I made a "song" book with all of the lyrics so that I would be able to keep them fresh on my mind and sing them often to my kids.

3. Watching children's videos in Portuguese – I make a point to watch various videos with my children not only as a fun activity but also as a way to hear more Portuguese.  The Super Baby series is really great for younger children – there's a Spanish/Portuguese version called Super Bebé/Bebê Mais.  I plan to purchase some Disney videos dubbed in Portuguese now that they're getting older.

4. Talking more frequently to Portuguese-speaking relatives via Skype – even my 2.5-year-old daughter loves it and it allows us to connect to family members in Brazil who she would not know otherwise.  It provides her great motivation for speaking in Portuguese!

Oi tudo bem? estou aprendo português por cinco meses. Você sabe onde eu posso encontrar um dicionario ou um phrasebook em português? Eu amo o brasil e as pessoas e muito bem. tchau e muito obrigado =)

Meu caso já é parecido com o seu, moro no Brasil e estou tentando ensinar meu bebê de 1 ano e 7 meses o inglês, o pai dele não fala inglês, mas para ele será futuramente muito importante e eu assim como você, não falo com ninguém por anos e estou também relembrando tudo e voltando a estudar rapidamente para acompanhá-lo, gostaria de saber se existem pessoas no fórum do Brasil com este mesmo propósito, pois é muito difícil aqui, não se é normal como lá fora, as pessoas acham estranho, enfim… gostaria de saber mais como está sua experiência, mesmo que inversa a minha, às vezes tenho medo que ele se torne passivo, pois ele já entende praticamente tudo que eu falo mais não fala nem em português, muito menos me responde em inglês.
