I'm learning Spanish together with my family, and we are all still at beginner level. Yesterday I was making sticky notes to label stuff in the house and was struggling to find the name of a particular piece of furniture in the living room. It's part armario and part comoda, and my dictionary could only get me so far. Doing a picture search on Google led me to the answer to all my problems ( well, at least the ones concerning household vocabulary);  IKEA!!! I visited http://www.ikea.es, the website for IKEA in Spain.

Their website is virtually an illustrated dictionary, and since they are "all over the world" they have websites in a multitude of languages :)

Oh, and that piece of furniture is called an aparador btw. Thanks, IKEA :)

PS: When it's time to learn more about clothes I'll be checking out H&M online ;)

Linda,

This is a fantastic idea! I just tried it out in Spanish (language we are learning as well) and German (our home language – not my native language so I don't know a lot of specific words). Fantastic! I had a great time looking through everything (and learned quite a few new words).

I'll do it with my kids soon – they'll be delighted to have an excuse to look through products online. They sometimes view the German playmobil and lego websites.

Thanks for sharing this great tip!!!

Warmly,

Corey

Hi Linda!

What an awesome idea! I am just working on a e-guidebook for parents of bilingual/multilingual children. Do you mind if I use this example in the guide?

all the best,

Annika

Thanks, guys :)

I'm thrilled you like the idea (I will confess to feeling a tiny bit like a genius when I stumbled across that one)Cool

Corey: I'm raising my three kids in non-native English and also learned a few new words browsing the .co.uk version of IKEA ;)

Annika: Of course you may use it! This e-book you mention intrigues me. I'd love to know more about it :)
