International Women’s Day: Encourage Language Learning Around the World

Happy International Women’s Day!

No matter where you live in the world, today is the day to celebrate the women in your lives: Mothers, daughters, grandmothers and sisters who have changed the world and our individual lives with their words, deeds and love. What started as a political movement has evolved into a “global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future.” And in many countries, International Women’s Day is even celebrated as a national holiday.

Being that we are in the throes of Language Challenge 180 what better way to commemorate this day than to celebrate all that women do to promote languages in our world. Mothers and grandmothers around the world pass on their languages to their children and grandchildren every day; offering the priceless gift of multilingualism. Others take the leap to learn new languages, reaping the sense of accomplishment that it brings.

What many of us don’t realize is just how important foreign languages are for young women around the world. Mastering another language opens doors and it can provide economic opportunities which would otherwise be unavailable. It broadens the mind and gives us a more direct appreciation for diversity in our world.

As a tribute to International Women’s Day, three female polyglots, Susanna, Jana and Fasulye, joined together to speak about the topic of women and language learning and to ask questions such as: Why are there so few women language learners in cyberspace? Do fewer women learn languages as compared to men? Or do women tend not to show their skills as openly?

Their discussion centers around these questions but is also an encouragement to women around the world to not only embrace their language skills but also to to do what they can to share them publicly – our daughters, in particular, need us as role models!

We hope that however you celebrate this day, you will do it in a language that you adore and with the women in your life that you love.

Happy International Women’s Day!
