I am a native english speaker. I spent two years in the Peace corps in Tonga, and ended up marying a Tongan man. We now live in the US and have three boys 6,3 and 1. We spoke a lot of tongan to my oldest when he was young and he understands a lot, but has a hard time speaking. My middle one understands some but not near as much as the first. My youngest I am really trying to speak a lot to, and he is understanding and speaking quite a bit.

It has been a challenge getting my husband to speak in Tongan to them as his english has gotten better. I speak Tongan, but am not a native speaker so I would love to improve on my own as well. My husband’s family in tonga does not speak much english, so I feel like it’s really important to make sure my kids know how to speak in Tongan for future trips to visit our family.

As far as resources go…I haven’t found any which makes it difficult to make learning Tongan fun and interesting. I would love any suggestions you have!
