Language Activity: Clothes and Cutlery with Our Bilingual Children

by Corey on September 1, 2010 · 0 comments

Multilingual Living friend, Gemma, sent in the following tip for how she gets her bilingual child motivated to learn words for clothes and cutlery in the minority language.  What a fun way to get the household chores done!

Thank you Gemma for taking the time to send in this wonderful tip!

My Italian mum used to tell me she used to teach me the name of all the clothes while hanging the laundry when I was a child.

I’ve been doing the same thing with my Italian-Japanese toddler since she was just few months old and now that she’s 2 years old, she knows the name of every single item in the laundry as well as all the objects we take out together from the dishwasher. She also tells me who the clothes or cutlery belongs to.

I only wish my husband would do the same with her in Japanese…

Thank you Gemma for this language activity!
