Language Activity: Time For Car ABC’s

by contributor · 2 comments

This fun activity was sent in to us by Christiane.  As many of us find ourselves driving here and there in the car, it is a great time to enhance our children’s language exposure and skills!  Try the following activity and let us know how it goes!

We like to play ABC with our kids (ages six and eight) on car trips.

It goes like this:

We start at the beginning of the alphabet.  Everybody has to say a word with “A” (then B, C etc) in both languages (ours are German and English). Extra points are given for an object that starts with the same letter in both languages (for example, in German: Lion / Loewe).

Just recently we also added extra points for French, which is a language they both learn in school.

Do you have a language activity that you would like to share?
to send it to us and we’ll give you all the credit!

We like to play an abc game in the car as well which goes like this: “Here comes a truck loaded with … O”… and the child has to come up with a word that starts with the letter O, although my kids always seem to pick ‘orangotango’ for O! (orangutan in Italian is one of their favorite words for how it sounds out!).

What a great game! Those ABC games come in so handy and are so much fun (and what a GREAT way to get language usage happening)! I can see why your kids like that word – I like it already and I can only hear myself saying it. Hah! Thank you so much for sharing, Rossella!
